A useful company record should show its work.
Papertrail connects a public-facing domain to the legal entity behind it, then records where every important field came from. The European Startup Trail is an editorial discovery layer on top of that evidence.
What the map means
The map is a curated directory of notable European technology companies. “Top” means selected for editorial relevance, European ecosystem importance, and category coverage. It is not a valuation table, investment recommendation, or objective claim that company number one is better than company number two.
Directory order is deterministic: editor’s picks first, then the reviewed editorial priority score from highest to lowest, then company name for ties. The score controls discovery order only; it does not measure company quality, valuation, or expected performance.
Locations represent the company’s principal European headquarters or founding hub. We link to the company’s official website and separately verify its operating entity before publishing registry fields.
Evidence ladder

The company’s own legal disclosures
Imprints, legal notices, privacy policies, terms, and structured organisation data. The crawler stays on the same domain, respects robots.txt, and limits page size and request volume.

Official national registers
Registry identifiers and base company data are checked against official sources where a reusable API or open-data file exists.

Licensed normalization providers
A provider such as North Data can normalize records across countries when the subscription explicitly permits API access, storage, and publication in our product.

- High
- The official company page and a registry identifier agree.
- Medium
- The company’s own page identifies the entity, but a registry ID is missing.
- Low
- The record is incomplete, conflicting, or relies on secondary evidence.
Corrections and inclusion
Companies can request a correction, submit a stronger primary source, or ask us to review an inclusion decision. We retain source timestamps so a later change does not silently rewrite what was previously observed.
